Project Overview

Mime and Matter Home was conceived as a meeting point between two worlds. On one side, it carries the spirit of a luxury resort, with spaces that flow with ease into landscaped greens, light that softens the day, and a sense of calm and pause. On the other hand, it remains deeply personal, crafted to reflect the character of its owners and to hold within it the stories of their journeys. For the well-travelled couple who live here, the home offers the rare privilege of experiencing each day with the quiet indulgence of a retreat, while still holding on to the warmth of identity and memory.

The interior framework is defined by a monochrome palette of black and white, a deliberate choice reflecting the owners’ affinity for a New York-inspired aesthetic. The restraint of this scheme provides a neutral canvas that heightens contrast and clarity. Within this disciplined backdrop, curated insertions, a vivid artwork, a sculptural luminaire, or artefacts collected during their travels become focal points, infusing the home with personality while maintaining its contemporary edge.

The architectural resolution of the house is shaped around a coherent grid system that governs the design of its elevations and fenestration. The entrance is articulated by a 15-foot-high door, extended with a 5-foot fixed panel, finished in black-stained ash wood and camouflaged within the façade through a precise grid alignment. This proportional logic extends to the fenestration: expansive 20-foot slide-and-fold windows open entire sections of the house to the landscape, while circular columns are strategically positioned to frame and enhance the corner glazing. Side sliders are incorporated for cross-ventilation, reinforcing the balance between openness and enclosure. The grid is further reiterated in the gate design, ensuring continuity in proportion and visual rhythm. Though the gate provides a clear physical boundary, its porous construction preserves transparency, allowing the architecture to remain visually seamless and connected.

The experience begins in the double-height foyer, where a linear flight of staircase clad in oak veneer and marble anchors the volume. Its sculptural presence is heightened by a composition of black Nura totems from Escape, turning the staircase into more than a functional connector. A circular window punctuates the verticality here, framing views of the terrace and sky beyond. This interplay of the circular with the linear was a deliberate gesture, adding rhythm and contrast to the otherwise orthogonal volume.
